A Taste of Tradition at Poplar Grove: Penticton’s Premier Winery Experience
Poplar Grove Winery located in Penticton is a result of the dedication and passion of one family's vision to elevate the Okanagan Valley to a global wine destination. Through quality viticulture and innovative winemaking, tradition and innovation intertwine to create wines that are celebrated both locally and internationally.
The Founding Vision of Poplar Grove
Founded in 1993, Poplar Grove Winery stands out as one of the first five wineries established on the Naramata Bench. When Tony and Barb Holler acquired the winery in 2007, they brought a clear, long-term vision to elevate Poplar Grove into one of Canada's most esteemed wine growing estates. Their journey, joined by their four sons Chris, Andrew, Matthew, and Eric, emphasizes meticulous vineyard care over more than 160 acres, showcasing the rich diversity of the Okanagan Valley's terroir. This family-driven endeavour strives not only for excellence in viticulture but also aims to firmly position Okanagan Valley wines on the global stage.
Poplar Grove is renowned for its exceptional Pinot Gris and Cabernet Franc, along with a range of varietals and blends that have captivated the palates of wine enthusiasts. Among these, The Legacy, a flagship red Bordeaux blend first crafted in 2003, has earned accolades for its consistent quality across vintages, highlighting its universal appeal.
Vineyard Diversity and Excellence
The geographical spread of Poplar Grove’s vineyards is impressive, with each location chosen for its unique soil and climate conditions, ideal for specific varietals. Munson Mountain Vineyard, established in 2008 directly in front of the winery, thrives with Cabernet Franc and Pinot Gris. Just a kilometre away, Chapman Davenport Vineyard, the original Poplar Grove site dating back to 2004, grows a rich variety including Malbec and Chardonnay. Further explorations into diverse terroirs led to the establishment of Hudson Vineyard in 2019 and Kasteel Vineyard in 2018, each nurturing distinct clones and varietals that contribute to the winery's complex and flavourful blends.
Haynes Creek Vineyard, near the US border, represents another strategic vineyard site, where a variety of grapes including Viognier, Syrah, and Petit Verdot are cultivated since 2005. Each vineyard plays a crucial role in Poplar Grove’s commitment to sustainable and precise winemaking, ensuring each bottle reflects the unique character of its origins.
Culinary Excellence at The Restaurant at Poplar Grove
In 2020, The Restaurant at Poplar Grove opened its doors, offering a menu that mirrors the winery's philosophy of quality and locality. The menu is designed around seasonal availability and local sourcing, reflecting a deep respect for the ingredients' origins and maximizing their flavours. This approach is not only sustainable but also enhances the dining experience, creating a seamless harmony between food and wine. The restaurant proudly supports local producers and sustainable practices, including adhering to Ocean Wise's recommendations for seafood.
The synergy between the Holler family’s winemaking and the culinary team’s philosophy ensures that every meal is not just eaten but experienced. This commitment to quality and sustainability in both vineyard and kitchen makes Poplar Grove not just a winery but a destination where every visit promises new flavours and memorable moments around the table.
